Helping Parents Prevent Youth Substance Abuse

Drinking, Smoking, Doing Drugs……everyone’s doing it right?

Not so! According to the Michigan Youth Risk Behavior Survey only about a third (that’s 1 in 3) of Michigan High School Students have used alcohol recently and only 1 out of 5 have recently used marijuana. The choice to use substances comes with serious consequences and only you can make the choice about what you want your life to be about.

Is it easy to always make the right choice? Of course not, and you might not always get it right. But, it is your call and you have the ability to choose who you are, to define yourself and to stand up for what you believe in.

Parents are a great support for youth who are trying to make positive choices. But, do you know what your parents think about your choices? Have they talked to you about it? How did they talk to you about it? Go to the TalkSooner Facebook Page and talk to other parents and youth about the ways you get support from your parents or how they let you know they are proud of the choices you make.
There are serious consequences that come with choosing alcohol or drugs. From losing the trust of your parents to losing out on a potential scholarship to some serious health issues, alcohol or drugs can mess up your life. Do you worry that you might have a problem with alcohol or drugs?

Featured Drug: E-Cigarettes

E-cigarettes (electronic cigarettes) are battery-operated devices that simulate tobacco smoking. The devices contain a heating element and a liquid solution. When the user sucks on the device, a sensor activates the heating element, which vaporizes the liquid solution and enables the user to inhale it. The liquid solutions come in many different flavors and typically contain nicotine, although there are solutions available that do not contain nicotine.
